University of Kansas Theatre Department: "
The addition
of the New Theatre Scholarships to our KU students has made a serious
impact on our ability to support so many of our talented undergraduate
and graduate students. The fact that they are named in honor of Dodie
Brown and Don Knotts adds a special significance to the awards and makes
for a wonderful addition to any actor's resume for name recognition. The
New Theatre has also given our students their first professional experience
as actors, in no small part to the exposure of the Guild Scholarships.
We are fortunate and blessed to have the Guild as a friend of John
Staniunas, Chair ***** "All students in our department are given an opportunity each spring to apply for scholarships. We have a deadline of March 1st each year and advertise to our students to come by our academic office and apply for all the scholarships we have available in our department, including the New Theatre Guild. We advertise this in our weekly newsletter and we send out at least two notifications to any student who claims theatre and film as a major. We have a small group of faculty members that are put on a Scholarship Committee each year. They are assigned by the Chair of the Department. These faculty members go through all our applicants and the scholarships that we have and match the most qualified students to the appropriate scholarship. Then, ALL the faculty and staff reps meet to go over the recommendations of the Scholarship Committee. During this time, we are given the names of all the students who applied and other pertinent information. Sometimes, faculty and/or staff members will be able to give information that was not known by the Scholarship Committee so it really helps us ensure that we get the top students - not only the top of their class in terms of their GPAs, but in terms of their commitment to the program and to the integrity of the field. We then vote on the scholarship recipients and announce them at the Theatre Banquet.
