"All students in our department are given an opportunity each spring to apply for scholarships. We have a deadline of March 1st each year and advertise to our students to come by our academic office and apply for all the scholarships we have available in our department, including the New Theatre Guild. We advertise this in our weekly newsletter and we send out at least two notifications to any student who claims theatre and film as a major.

We have a small group of faculty members that are put on a Scholarship Committee each year. They are assigned by the Chair of the Department. These faculty members go through all our applicants and the scholarships that we have and match the most qualified students to the appropriate scholarship. Then, ALL the faculty and staff reps meet to go over the recommendations of the Scholarship Committee. During this time, we are given the names of all the students who applied and other pertinent information. Sometimes, faculty and/or staff members will be able to give information that was not known by the Scholarship Committee so it really helps us ensure that we get the top students - not only the top of their class in terms of their GPAs, but in terms of their commitment to the program and to the integrity of the field. We then vote on the scholarship recipients and announce them at the Theatre Banquet. "

"As any starving student/artist will declare, finances are extremely tight
during the summer causing many of us to take non-artistic related jobs in
order to make ends meet. Due to the assistance of the New Theatre Guild's Virginia Kelley Scholarship, I was not forced to take such a position this year but rather got to assist the managing director of the Kansas City
Repertory Theatre (KCRep) as his arts management intern while working as
dramaturg for Actors Theatre of Kansas City's production of Taking Sides. In the fall, I will be the KCRep's artistic intern and functioning as the
assistant director/assistant stage manager on their productions of Clay,
Radio Golf, and A Christmas Carol, and will also serve as the chief
writer/editor of the Theatre Training News (a yearly publication of UMKC's
Theatre Department). The spring will bring in an exciting new stage
adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's masterpiece that is The Master and
Margarita, which I, as dramaturg, have been assisting in its development
since last spring with playwright Ron Hutchinson and director Barry Kyle,
and finally, I will begin summer 2009 as the assistant director/assistant
stage manager of U:Bug Me at the Coterie Theatre. My wife and I would like to thank Mrs. Kelley and the Guild for their support of students in the
arts."
