2016 KENTUCKY DERBY PARTY
The first Saturday in May offered a two-minute sporting event that unfolded into an afternoon of fun and fundraising. The Guild’s annual Kentucky Derby Day benefit was held May 7 at the Mission Hills Country Club in a setting so perfect members and guests could feel they were at Churchill Downs. While sipping the iconic mint julep, party goers could pick their favorite horse at the betting table professionally manned by Jim Holzmark and Karl Roscoe or wander through the silent auction room artfully arranged and documented by Seth McClintock. Horse race table games were operated by David Wiley, Tom Nagel, and Melissa Cooper. Gary Krings led a rousing hat judging contest. Entertainment was provided by UMKC’s theatre department with a performance of “You Whinny Some, You Lose Some” starring student actors Laura Jacobs and Joseph Fournier. Following a nail-biting horse race on multiple television screens, a buffet of traditional derby fare was served.
